What Is an Internet Service Provider (ISP)? Explained
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is the company you pay a fee to for access to the Internet. Regardless of the type of Internet access you have (cable, ADSL, dial-up, wireless), an ISP provides you or your business with a portion of their Internet connection. Internet-connected devices send requests through their ISP to reach servers that provide websites, files, and online services. Those servers rely on their network connections and service providers to deliver content to users. They can be connected directly to a home or business or transmitted wirelessly via satellite or other technology.
What Does An ISP Do?
We all have some kind of device in our home or business that connects us to the internet. It’s through this device that your phone, laptop, desktop computer, and other internet-enabled devices reach the rest of the world – and this is all done through various ISPs.
Characteristics Of Internet Access Providers In Different Countries
Internet service providers in different countries may offer different services. Some providers may offer basic internet access, while others may offer additional services such as VoIP or internet television.

Is The ISP Experiencing Problems Or Is It Me?
It’s basically pointless to go through all the troubleshooting steps to fix your network if your ISP is the one with the problem… but how do you know if it’s your own network or the ISP that’s to blame?
The simplest thing to do if you can’t open a webpage is to try a different one. If the other pages work fine, then obviously it’s not your computer or your ISP that’s having problems—it’s either the web server hosting the page you’re trying to access or the ISP that uses the page to get online. There’s nothing you can do except wait for them to fix it.
If none of the pages you’re testing are working, the first thing to do is try opening them on another computer or device on your network, since the problem isn’t that all the ISPs or the servers of the pages you’re trying to visit are malfunctioning.
So if your desktop computer isn’t displaying the Google website, try it on your laptop or phone (but make sure it’s connected to Wi-Fi). If you can’t reproduce the problem on these devices, then the issue must be with your desktop computer.
If your desktop computer is the only device unable to load any of these pages, try restarting it. If that doesn’t fix it, you may need to change your server’s DNS settings.
However, if none of your devices can open a webpage, then you should restart your router or modem. This step usually fixes these kinds of general network problems. If the problem persists, contact your ISP for more information, as they may be experiencing issues or may have disconnected your internet access for other reasons.
